Bulletproof Coffee (Veganized)

Have you ever made fun of something and then actually tried it and been way into it? I talked soooo much crap about Bulletproof coffee before I actually tried it. I don’t think I’ve ever rolled my eyes so much about a health trend before in my life. All the talk about “biohacking” and ketosis really turned me off. Also the whole butter thing turned me off.

But, I was wrong.

I veganized the recipe and now I love it. I’ve been drinking it everyday for about 2 months now. And I feel fantastic. And slightly obsessed with it.

So what exactly is Bulletproof coffee?

Traditional Bulletproof is organic black coffee blended with 1-2 tablespoons grass fed butter and1-2 tablespoons “Brain Octane oil", an 8-carbon fraction of Medium-chain triglyceride oil. Not vegan friendly.

What I Experienced:

  • I didn’t feel jittery after my coffee. I did notice one morning i had plain iced coffee and I felt super jittery and then a hard crash. I think the fat in the coconut oil helps prevent a caffeine spike.
  • Kept me full and feeling good when I worked out in the morning.
  • My sugar craving have really subsided. Even when I was PMSing.
  • I don’t weigh myself but I feel leaner.


My recipe for vegan Bulletproof coffee:

  • 8 oz organic black coffee 
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1-2 tablespoons Brain Octane 
  • Put it in the vitamix and blend for 20-30 seconds

I use coconut oil instead of butter in my Bullet Proof coffee to make it vegan. The Brain Octane produces 4x the ketone energy of plain coconut oil, and also has potent anti-microbial effects that help support healthy digestion and immune function. I still use coconut oil because I love the taste. I did my research about MCT oils and really think this one is the best.

Lately I’ve been throwing in Tocos : it’s the bran of organically grown brown rice, which is a super rich source of fat-soluble, bio-available vitamins D and E and amazing for connective tissue, skin, and healthy muscle function. Did I mention it tastes like vanilla? It’s delicious. 

Other things I like to add in are maca, cacao, cinnamon, ashwaganda, and vanilla extract or powder. So good. I feel like adding in one of these (or all) really kicks it up a notch.

Keep in mind, quality counts when it comes to coffee. I always drink organic coffee. Coffee is among the most heavily chemically treated foods in the world. It's grown inn synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides. Ugh. Not to mention the environmental and social impact conventional coffee has.
