Should You Stop Using Coconut Oil?

So last week the AHA put out on article saying that coconut oil is bad for you based on the amount of saturated fat in it. They reviewed existing data on saturated fat (some of the studies they used were almost 60 years old FYI), showing coconut oil increased LDL ("bad") cholesterol in seven out of seven controlled trials. Researchers didn't see a difference between coconut oil and other oils high in saturated fat (butter, beef fat and palm oil) even though coconut oil is way less inflammatory when eaten as opposed to other oils or animal fats.

The studies they did cite only showed that coconut oil raised cholesterol,  but failed to mention  while it raised the LDL cholesterol ( the "bad" one) it also raised the HDL cholesterol (the "good"one).

One thing I thought was super sketchy with the study is that two members of the US Canola Association sit on the AHA nutrition advisory panel as well some other corporate influencers. Sorry, that sounds biased as hell to me.

Personally, I don't see any harm in coconut oil in moderation. Coconut oil and MCT oil helps me feel energized, more satiated when I add it to my smoothies, and REALLY curb my sugar cravings. You know I love my vegan bulletproof coffee and putting a tablespoon in my smoothie.

A good portion of the saturated fat part of coconut oil is made of lauric acid which is quickly and easily metabolized as a good energy source meaning you burn it for fuel instead of packing it on your waistline. (MCT oil is basically a supercharged version of this) It's also the best oil to cook with. It doesn't oxidize like other oils at high temperatures which means less free radicals. It also aids with the absorption of certain vitamins and other nutrients.

To sum it up, I don't see anything wrong with using (organic) coconut oil in moderation. I mean, I don't imagine people chugging coconut oil by the jar so putting a tablespoon in your coffee, smoothie, or cooking with it won't hurt you and you would be missing out on the good benefits of it.

Hope you guys are having a killer start to the summer!!
