Cauliflower Smoothie Q & A
Every few dayI’ve been getting questions about cauliflower smoothies. What do they taste like? Do they taste like cauliflower? Do I cook it and then put it in? Is it raw? Why would you put cauliflower in your smoothies?
I was super hesitant to try this. I love cauliflower but wasn't sure if I would love it in my smoothie. And there's nothing worse then a ruined smoothie. (I mean there is.....) Finally, with a few tentative florets, I tried it. And loved it. So let me break it down for you.
I’ll start with the why part first.
Low Sugar. I started to put cauliflower in my smoothies when I felt like my smoothies were getting too sugary. All the sugar in the smoothies all the time just weren’t making me feel great. I started looking for something to use in place of bananas and stumbled on cauliflower.
Added Veggies and Fiber. Using cauliflower also gives you an extra serving of veggies, with the added vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. I feel fuller, longer, after a cauliflower smoothie.
It’s also super inexepensive. A bag of organic frozen cauliflower costs $2 at Whole Foods.
You don’t have to let anything ripen or worry it's going to spoil. Some days I felt like there where no remotely ripe bananas in Brooklyn. I'd go to bodegas, fruit stands and grocery stores and be greeted with sad, green, bananas. Or we'd go out of town for a few days and I would return home to a bunch of over ripened bananas and a shit ton of fruit flies. Gross.
What does it taste like?
It honestly doesn’t taste like anything. Steamed cauliflower is super bland and just absorbs the other flavors that you put in. It makes the smoothie tastes SUPER creamy.
When I first started, I put a few florets in at a time and check to make sure it didn’t taste bad.
How to do it:
I buy bags of organic frozen cauliflower from Whole Foods to keep in my freezer. I find that this is the easiest and cheapest way to do it. You can also buy whole heads of cauli, cut them up, steam the for a few minutes and then freeze them. It’s good to steam them (the bags of cauliflower are steamed) before you freeze them to avoid the bloating and gas that sometimes comes with cruciferous veggies.
I usually sup 3/4 - 1 cup of cauliflower for one banana. I don't do cauliflower everyday because I don't want to develop an intolerance to cauliflower and I believe that variety is the spice of life!
