Oh hello there!

So, one of the things I get asked about a lot is CBD. I use it just about everyday. When I first heard of it I was definitely hesitant to try it because I'm not a fan of smoking weed. I've tried and I just don't like how I feel when I'm high. It would make me feel like I was stuck on the couch and I don't like things that mess with my lungs. 


I got over the fear of CBD and gave it a try. It's definitely helped me manage my anxiety and helped me recover from hard training sessions. I think it can help anyone. (There are a ton of science-y articles out there that break it down way better than I do. I'm just giving you my personal experiences with it.)

Is CBD the same as marijuana? Is it a drug?

First things first: CBD is not psychoactive and will not get you high. CBD is derived from hemp but isn't the same thing as THC, which is what would get you high. CBD is a compound that interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which is a series of receptors regulates pain, mood, the immune system, memory, stress response, and other important functions.

How does it make you feel? 

To me, when I take CBD it makes me feel like I had a few sips of wine. Does that make sense? It just chills me out and I just feel super calm. I don't feel "high" like you would if you smoked weed. I just feel calm and collected. It let's me focus more.

How does it help with your anxiety?

I will always have anxiety. I've learned that I can manage my anxiety through exercise, meditation and CBD. (I know this may not work for everyone, but through years of trial and error, it works for me) Science wise CBD oil is thought to stimulate ECS serotonin receptors in a way that can positively increase serotonin levels and improve mental health. 

How do you take it?


I take a dropper under tongue or I'll put some in my Ginger Lemon tea (I use the Select CBD Lemon Ginger). I've also tried CBD chocolates, which were great, but I like to know exactly how much I'm taking. I also will put CBD on my legs after a run. It helps with inflammation and let's me bounce back quicker. NOTE: You should always start small when trying CBD. You can always take more if you need it.

Do you take it before you run?

I have before. I don't alway though. It helps me mentally relax before a long run or a hard workout where my brain is going a million miles an hour and I just need to get out the door. Sometimes I have a hard time leaving my house (you can ask Chris, I often have to go back a few times to make sure the door is locked and everything is unplugged) and this helps me calm down.

What about after your run?

I either use a CBD salve or just straight from the dropper on my legs (I like the Peppermint CBD oil for this). I run mostly on pavement (that's just living in NYC) and my legs definitely feel it after a high mileage week. Using the CBD oil on my calves I think has helped me not get shin splints (which have happened in the past) and recover faster. This is a good article about CBD and pain relief.    

What kind of CBD do you take?


I really like Select CBD. I've tried some others and haven't been too thrilled about them. I also love these Edible CBD Chocolates. They are around $4 for a package of two. You can order them online or pick them up at Magic Mix Juicery in NYC.
